As part of Building Harlow's Future and our commitment to renewing our neighbourhoods, we have transformed several of Harlow's underpasses with vibrant and creative murals.

These artworks have been widely praised, so we wanted to get your ideas on designs for the remaining underpasses across the town.

The ideas board is now closed, but the ideas can still be viewed. You can also see a summary of the most popular ideas in our word cloud document.

We received a total of 80 underpass mural ideas. The ideas submitted show a desire for murals that celebrate Harlow's unique identity, history and community spirit.

The most frequently occurring theme is local history and heritage, with residents proposing murals featuring Harlow's transition from village communities to New Town status, Sir Frederick Gibberd's vision, the six original villages, Roman heritage, local architecture, the River Stort, and Potter Street's historical significance.

Sport and active lifestyles received particularly strong support. Harlow Town FC and the club's famous 1980 FA Cup run appeared repeatedly, alongside suggestions relating to rugby, cycling, skating, skateboarding, local sports clubs and sporting role models. Cycling in particular remains a strong theme, reflecting pride in Harlow's extensive cycle network and reputation as a cycling town.

There is also considerable support for celebrating Harlow's status as the UK's first Sculpture Town and recognising important local innovations such as fibre optics.

Many respondents suggested recognising NHS staff, ambulance crews, teachers, care workers, volunteers, charities and community organisations.

The consultation also highlighted significant interest in nature and wildlife, including horses grazing on common land, deer, foxes, badgers, butterflies, moths, birds, rivers, trees and flowers. Many respondents favour murals that reflect the town's green spaces and natural environment.

Alongside this, residents showed enthusiasm for arts, culture and entertainment themes including the Town Show, Playhouse, The Square music venue, performing arts groups, graffiti culture and family friendly artwork designed to engage children and young people.

Overall, responses suggest that residents are most supportive of murals that are distinctly Harlow-focused, celebrating local heritage, community achievements, sporting pride, nature and cultural life.
