In September 2024 we consulted on a character appraisal and management proposals for Churchgate Street conservation area.

The proposals included an Article 4 Direction, conservation area boundary revision and publication of a management plan and guidance document.

The finalised character appraisal and management proposals, adopted revised area boundary map and responses schedule for the consultation on these can be viewed in the documents section.

One of the proposals was to introduce an Article 4 direction for the area. The direction means that planning permission would be needed to make certain changes to a house, to ensure that changes are positive and sympathetic to the historic character of Churchgate Street.

On 3 March 2025, the we drafted the direction, due come into force on 4 March 2026.

We consulted on the direction, along with a draft management plan and guidance document in April 2025.

We also sent letters to all properties in the Churchgate Street conservation area to advise them about the consultation.

The Article 4 direction was confirmed on 4 March 2026.
